fresh air &
vitamin D
but that wind —
so raw, brisk
& bitterly cold
hidden rabbit
scurries from wintering spirea
little one, I mean no harm!
all caught up on those missed hours of sleep
two days past, two nights of wired brain,
shuffling across the living room carpet, lights off
quiet all around, with that frenzied internal hum
I’m better now, a three-hour mid-morning nap
all systems GO until the next late-night snafu
water starts to churn inside the mike
I wait for those boiling bubbles
my mug sits on the counter, ready to go
I just need to decide: no-calorie tea
or the yum of chanilla* chai?
* My own creation, a mixture of Big Train chocolate and vanilla!
endearing, the conversations
one has with a showering spouse
while getting dressed in the morning
*
we discuss the nuances of weather,
savored memories of Old Spice, Charlie & Drakkar
when to start the turkey tetrazzini
puppy at rest
the curvature of his body
those sweet little legs
poisonous arrows
deflections of who
we might best become
violent swirls
of snow
on frigid
winter pavement
I dream
of the yawning
tedium
of democracy
three squirrels
our birch tree
jungle gym
perhaps too soon
to say for sure
but if not for the people,
if not for us, for our voices,
our loud anguished cries, our outrage
if not for the brave citizens
taking to the streets to record
the unjust, demented actions
of these zealous marauders & thugs,
surely the violence in Minneapolis
would have continued unchecked.
*
I am proud. I am grateful.
