pale January sky
fresh snow cover
the warmth of red wine
and just like that,
our ten-day forecast
gifts us with 40s & 50s
the bite of January
cold feet rassling for warmth
bedtime ritual
winter blankets a stubbled plain
the last of corn’s plantings
soon, families will reside in this place
poetry newsletters
lovingly curated
new year ruthlessness
clean, fresh, invigorating air
January’s sunshine, nearly warm
neighbor’s faded hydrangeas
peering skyward
dare we whisper of spring?
listened to music this afternoon
playlists on a forgotten iPod
caught in the beat, my ears were happy
snow-dusted pathways
parted January curtains
an entirely new world
a simple text
no effort at all, really;
gratitude, on repeat –
happy I’d reached out
puppy sleeps in the light
that pours from a south-facing window,
sunshine warms his gumdrop nose—
our boy, dreaming
of belly rubs, car rides & squirrels
