The (New?) American Way

Angry voices, unbridled venom.
Wired (and wireless) pokes and jabs targeting a multitude of faceless entities.
Ugliness leaching outward, spreading like a stain

On humanity.

Or rather, what we once knew as

  • Humanity
  • Community
  • Respect
  • Tolerance
  • Patriotism
  • The American Way

We are now a nation no longer united but rather horribly, inextricably divided.

Talking heads and a 24/7 vomitude of news and commentary
Twisting ‘freedom’ to spew hate
And incite fear, violence and an uneasy division

Of our fellow compatriots, instilling disrespect and incivility far and wide.

What’s our way forward? No answers here.
Sadly, this very medium
While a powerful tool for good
Still contributes to this implosion of ill-will.

I’m hopeful, however, that we can come together and find a way. United we stand and, truly, divided we WILL fall.

  1. I hope for all our sakes Julie, that we as a human race will at least start to understand that we all need to be united, because as you say, divided, we WILL fall. A very powerful piece of writing Julie!!! πŸ™‚

      • I agree with you totally Julie, it’s quite sad to see how many people seem to jump on the ‘hate’ band wagon that often seems to sweep social media – mind you, the old style media (TV, newspapers and to some extent radio) aren’t much better. I think that is one of the things I like so much about the wordpress blog community, in most cases everyone is fairly positive in their thoughts, and caring too! (whether it’s about their fellow human beings, or the wonderful planet we live on)

  2. I couldn’t have said it any better.
It saddens me to see that civilized debate and the ability to agree to disagree in a respectful manner have been replaced by name-calling and shouting matches.
Some folks just don’t seem to understand that insisting on getting in the last word doesn’t make them right; but it does make them look like obnoxious loudmouths.
The good news is that we can choose to step away from or unfollow those blowhards.

    • I posted a similar train of thought on my Facebook page and was heartened by all the positive feedback (with many, many commenting that they too had noticed an increase in the vitriol as well). However, I also noted that if anyone was so inclined to unfriend me, to by all means do so. I did lose two ‘friends’ (one of whom I’ve figured out and can’t say that I’m surprised as we share vastly different political views and I still have no idea who the other one was). Still, it was encouraging to know that I’m not alone in my dissatisfaction of this so maybe there is still hope!
