darkness bearing down
out of the northwest
an ominous sky
bursting with promise
getting played
the mellow season
unofficially, autumn begins
already, a few leaves have turned
Labor Day weekend wanes

summer décor, banished to the B.
wave after wave, I carry up
scarlets, crimsons, mauves & golds

closets sorted, drawers realigned
new beginnings in the dusk of summer
lovely fall is underway!
perusing all sorts of shelves: my personal collections, my Kindle, the NYT best-seller lists, recommendations from friends & dozens of literary newsletters that crowd my Inbox each & every day
it’s almost unfair,
so many books, so little time
overwhelming, that’s what it is
but in a delirious,
OMG, kind of way
college football season begins
stadium rumbles & roars
alumni pride colors the stands
anticipation ripples & surges —
the ball is snapped
and here we go!
the tune-up
case in point
every poem begins
as a superfluous conglomeration
of letters, vowels,
white space
and excess
squirm
they trickle in —
the Likes, the Shares, the Restacks
a few Comments, if we’re lucky;
racking up Followers
& new Subscribers —
all those dopamine hits
we covet like the drooling dogs
we uncomfortably suspect
we really, truly, pathetically are
can you feel it…
