Having grown up there, near Pilot Knob State Park (see link), it never occurred to me others might wonder about the meaning of the name. 🙂 This tower sits atop the second highest point in the state of Iowa. I assume ‘pilot’ is a reference of directional guidance (?!?!?) and ‘knob’ refers to the protrusion of land where the tower sits. Shrug. I’ve never really thought about it too much!
